5 things to know about divorce

Divorce is emotionally tough on you and your family.

There are 5 things worth considering or knowing about divorce

  1. If raw emotions are removed, divorce is more amicable

Sometimes divorce happens simply on growing apart and both you and your ex decide it is the right decision.

However, often divorce is as a result of conflict.

Where people are separated for a while before seeking a divorce, often they have worked through lots of their emotions. We often find the divorce process more amicable at this stage.

  2. You are more likely to stay in a marriage if there are children

Unsurprisingly, where there are children in your relationship, you are likely to stay in an unhappy marriage for longer than those who haven’t had children together.

On average, those without children are likely to seek a divorce around the 4 year mark. Those who have children are likely to hold off much longer. And it’s not uncommon for marriages to fall apart once children have left home.

  3. Divorce costs vary

The cost of divorce depends entirely on each divorce.
Where couples have decided together on what they want and agree on division of assets, money and child arrangements, divorce is often less costly.

Acrimonious divorces, or ones that require court hearings, tend to incur more costs.

  4. It can take a year and a half to get a divorce

On average it is taking about a year to 18 months to get to decree absolute.

It is rare, but not unheard of, for divorce cases to take years.

The more conflict the longer it takes to resolve. This is why the family court want you to try family mediation before considering court proceedings.

It is better for all parties, including children, to reach agreements together than have decisions made for you by court.

  5. Is a happy marriage just luck?

Is there a magic formula to a marriage?

    In short, no.

Each marriage is individual and depends entirely on the two people within that marriage.

Communication seems to be key. We are individuals and change constantly. Life events happen to us within our marriage. If you can talk and grow/change together, you may have more ‘luck’ at a lasting marriage.

Nothing can prepare you for divorce if you are facing it. You don’t know how you will feel and how you will cope.
