In today’s news is the story of the millionaire couple who have risked ‘financial suicide’ with divorce costs.

Lawyer Aloke Ray and anaesthetist Charoo Sekhri have spent a combined £860,000 so far on legal fees arguing about their divorce since they separated two years ago.

A High Court judge has begged the couple to abandon their court battle which has eroded almost ¼ of their combined wealth.

The couple were married for less than two years and have a son together. Within months of their son’s birth the couple began having violent arguments and separated soon after.

They are both of Indian origin and currently live in Singapore.

Much of their legal costs so far have been spent arguing where the divorce should be heard. As the couple were living and working in England during their marriage, it was ruled that the divorce be heard in this country.

Financially weaker spouses tend to seek divorce in the UK, which is known to have a reputation of generous pay-outs for them, more than elsewhere in the world.

However, Samantha Lee expert divorce lawyer at Swain & Co, says, “Costs of divorce do not have to spiral out of control. There fixed fee options and pay as you go options, so you pay for the legal advice you need/want. There is also family mediation as an alternative to court.”
