Celebrity divorces can be unrealistic for the rest of us

The Law Society warns that sometimes celebrity divorces can give ordinary couples an unrealistic view of what to expect.

These comments come after the speed at which Nigella Lawson and Charles Saatchi’s divorce is progressing. The Law Society points out that the speed of proceedings can be attributed to the fact that neither party is making any financial claims against the other. This, the Society says, is in stark contrast to most divorces.

It also warns against couples resorting to ‘cut price’ options to obtain divorce.

Cuts to legal aid have meant that more and more people are representing themselves or using online divorce websites, without understanding the divorce process.

The Law Society warns that these cut price options are not always best and can end up costing a lot more and adding to the already stressful and emotional turmoil of divorce and separation.

Nicola Whitley, expert family and divorce lawyer at Swain & Co says, “Divorce is rarely straightforward. Complex matters of sorting out practical issues such as arrangements for children and division of assets is much more common, and this is when it is essential that people get legal advice on rights and options available.”

Nicolas Flunk, Law Society President says, “Seeking legal advice from a solicitor will often save you time and money in the long run.”
