With the recent news that the Duke and Duchess of York may be considering remarrying after their 1996 divorce, it is reported that remarrying your ex is not that uncommon.

According to the Office of National Statistics, a third of all marriages are now second marriages for the bride, the groom or both. This is compared to less than one in 10, 60 years ago.

But, these figures cannot tell us how many of these remarriages involve the same couple.

However, divorce lawyers report that remarrying your ex after divorce is not as uncommon as you might think.

Samantha Lee, expert family law and divorce lawyer at Swain & Co says, “We are seeing more post-marital agreements being used for couples who reconcile after divorce. The post-marital agreements set out what will happen if things go wrong again. This way, the couple don’t have to fear what will happen if their marriage breaks down again.”

Some couples can build and learn from their first marriage and make the second one work. However, statistically second marriages break down more than first time marriages.

Samantha adds, “Whether it is your first marriage or not, divorce is an emotionally difficult time and you need to know what options are available. You don’t have to conduct your divorce proceedings through the court, there are other options such as family mediation to consider.”
