A psychologist has said that young children staying overnight with their father when parents have separated “reduces brain development’ and creates a tendency toward ‘unhealthy attachment issues’”.
This has sparked fury with Fathers’ Rights campaigners who fight tirelessly to shake the stereotype that children are better off with their mothers.
The Presumption of Shared Parenting (which came into force this year) enshrines the presumption that both parents should be involved with their child(ren) when they separate. However, it does not give a right to access, or prescribe a minimum amount of time with a child.
Mary Anne Beedle says, “It is common practice that the courts will want to see children spending nights with both parents, so long as it is safe and practicable. Every child and family is different and it is important to look at the circumstances for the individuals involved.”
