Divorce and Christmas – not two words you might believe sit together.

But, January is a busy time for divorce lawyers – but why?

Many people find Christmas stressful. I know I do!

There’s:

  • Planning of presents
  • Purchasing of presents
  • Wrapping
  • Dinner to plan
  • Children’s activities and parties
  • Family to visit

The stress can have a lot to answer for.

If you add that to an already strained relationship, you might understand the reason of divorce and Christmas.

Not only are you stressed, but you may be forced to spend time with family. They may be in laws that you do not get along with, family feuds and underlying martial problems.

Importantly, you may have had to spend time with your partner and realise that you don’t want to spend the rest of your life with them.

It is also common that many couples may be having one last Christmas as a family.

Often they do it for the children and extended family.

So, naturally the New Year marks new beginnings.

Although you could argue that Divorce is an ending. Many people do not see it as such. In fact, many unhappy couples see divorce as empowering.

It can also be scary and lonely.

In January, there is the post Christmas and New Year comedown and the days still feel short.

Some helpful advice if you are facing relationship breakdown and divorce after Christmas:

  • Seek support from family and friends

You are on a rollercoaster of emotions. There will be various times you feel low and need support. Do not shut out friends and family. Instead, ensure that you let them help look after you.

  • Choose a lawyer to suit you

Ensure you choose the right solicitor for the outcome you’d prefer. There will be a difference in the lawyer someone chooses for an aggressive severing situation versus the couples that want to split amicably.

  • Find a financial advisor

Even if finances seem simple, it is always advisable to seek advice on what your life may be like and any changes you may need to make.
