Divorce: The daily grind of life can spark marital dissatisfaction
Often when we think of divorce, it’s thought that big betrayals such as affairs, addiction and abuse drive marriages apart.
More often it is the daily grind of life that sparks dissatisfaction in marriages – the money troubles, childcare, household running.
It is easy to get lost in the daily struggles and routine of ordinary life. This can be referred to the honeymoon phase of marriage ending.
Over time, over crosswords, bickering and resentment, it can be hard to remember what drew you together in the first place.
It is at this point you see some marriages fall apart.
Samantha Lee, head of divorce and family law at Swain & Co Solicitors comments,
“The reasons for people seeking a divorce are varied. Often there is not one solid reason, but a build up of years of dissatisfaction. Coming to the decision to end your marriage is personal, individual and not easily reached.”
Rekindling love?
Following reading an interesting article in The Guardian regarding couples who marry, divorce and then remarry, it is interesting to read that this happened to be the case.
For the couples in the article, life events and contact after many years apart sparked love again.
According to this article, this event is so rare that there aren’t any statistics on it.
It could be thought that old issues will arise again. But with couples then being older it can cause people to become mellower.
Plus the money and childcare issues may not be present, and mistakes recognised.
There has to be real change.
A common thread of these rekindlings is children binding them back together – an ill child in hospital, the tragedy of losing a child or attending events together for the children.
In between marriages there may be other relationships, marriages and children.
Samantha comments,
“At this point the couples may be much older and accrued life experiences and assets outside of the relationship. It is important that when entering a second marriage, with your first love or not, that you go in knowing who is bringing what into that marriage. There may be things you wish to protect for your children etc. It is wise to consider speaking to a lawyer about your options. Pre nuptial agreements are more common at this stage in adult life.”
