Domestic Violence deaths highest level in 5 years

In the UK, the amount of people who died as a result of domestic violence hit its highest level in 5 years.

173 people were killed in domestic violence incidents.

The BBC obtained data from 43 police forces in the UK.

Both men and women are victims of domestic violence. However, the vast majority of deaths from domestic violence were women.

Between April 2014 and March 2017, approximately ¾ of deaths caused my domestic violence from partners, ex partners or family members were women. The majority of suspects are male.

Samantha Lee, head of family law at Swain & Co Solicitors comments,

“These are awful statistics to see. Behind each death lies family members having to cope with live without a loved one, taken by someone they had in their lives.”

“Domestic abuse and violence comes from the perpetrators need to control their victim. It takes many forms including isolation from family and friends, controlling money and employment, physical violence and emotional abuse. We need help and support in our communities to for people to reach out to.”

Government commitment?

Boris Johnson tweeted that domestic abuse legislation is to be reintroduced in the Queen’s speech.

Let’s hope the government sticks to this priority.

The new bill would place a legal duty upon councils to provide secure homes for those fleeing domestic violence and their children. It will also provide the first legal government definition of domestic abuse, including economic abuse and coercive behaviour.
