Domestic abuse in American Football taken seriously

The NFL have appointed three female advisors to outline policy in relation to domestic abuse.

The appointment follows criticism after a player was handed, what was later seen as, a lenient punishment for punching his partner. After a video surfaced showing him punch her, he was released by his team and suspended indefinitely.

This is the first time that the NFL have taken a hard line on domestic abuse issues, with some criticising teams for putting their players on a pedestal.

The advisors are Jane Randel, who is the co-founder of No more, a campaign against domestic violence and sexual assault (http://nomore.org/) and Rita Smith, who is the former executive of the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence (http://www.ncadv.org/). Lisa Friel was previously the head of the Sex Crimes Prosecution Unit in the New York County District Attorney’s Office.

Domestic Abuse advisors

Nicola Whitley, family Solicitor specialising in matters involving domestic abuse says, “We could learn a lot from our friends over the pond. To see these women appointed is a huge step in making people aware of the seriousness of domestic abuse and how rife it is throughout the world. I represent people across Hampshire from Southampton, to Havant and across to Chichester and further through West Sussex from all walks of life. The key is to speak out – don’t suffer in silence”.
