Divorce court fee to increase

The Government has announced that it is going to increase the issue fee for divorce proceedings. This is the cost of starting divorce proceedings.

The fee is currently £410 but it is now likely to increase to £550.

In 2013 the fee was £340, so this is an increase over two years of 62%.

In contrast, it costs £46 to marry at a register office.

Nicola Whitley, specialist family Solicitor says “It is a huge fee for divorce proceedings. The Government had proposed an increase to £750 so this sounds better in comparison.

The process for divorce has been streamlined and applications for decree nisi are now considered by legal advisors rather than Judges so it seems strange that the cost is going up.”

Don’t forget, fee remission is available for payment of all or part of the fee and it is worth checking whether you are eligible for this. To check whether you can get fee remission for your court fee go here: https://www.justice.gov.uk/courts/fees
