A study has shown that millions of Britons are staying in unhappy marriages because they fear financial or emotional hardship.

One in five admit that they feel trapped within their unhappy marriage and would divorce if their financial security was assured.

The study was carried out on 2,000 adults and one in ten felt stuck in a loveless marriage and 15% wish they had married someone else.

Men blamed the unhappy state of their marriage on frustrations with their sex lives, while women said that they had too little fun and too much money worry.

Only four in ten said that their marriage had turned out as they had expected it to.

Samantha Lee, divorce lawyer at Swain & Co says, “Divorce and separation is a very emotionally difficult time and those contemplating it will have many questions and reservations over the practical issues of money, child arrangements etc.”

“It is important for people to see legal advice and consider their options. There may be ways to deal with separation and to divide finances which they are not aware of.”
